The Sun Hotel and Coaching Inn - Lake District, Cumbria.
Sitting beneath the imposing peak of the Old Man of Coniston, just at the edge of the village, this 3 Crown hotel (AA 2 Star) is an excellent place to stay whilst exploring the Lakes. It has a 400 year old pub attached to it and is only a mile from the shores of Lake Coniston. This is where Donald Campbell insisted on staying whilst attempting to break the World Water Speed Record in 1967. One of the special beers in the bar is named after his craft, "Bluebird". Most of the 11 rooms in this family run hotel are en-suite. Since first writing this, the wreckage of Campbell's boat, and his body have been located deep at the bottom of the lake over 30 years later, and are due to be recovered in the near future.
Camping is available on the shores of the lake at Coniston Hall Campsite. Both these options are ideal for exploring the English Lake District.
