I speak pretty good french myself, in fact I'm just about fluent.  But this didn't just happen overnight.  I studied hard for 'O' levels, 'A' levels a degree , and even a teaching qualification in French.  This was the easy bit.  To actually become proficient and sound something like a Frenchman, I spent exhange visits with a french family, did 3 seasons working on french beaches and Mediterranean restaurants and also worked as a Holiday Rep in France.  Then came the annual kayaking / biking / skiing holidays to France and a corresponding high level of confidence with the language.

Some people think it's a 2 minute job to learn a new language.  It isn't.  It requires self motivation and commitment.  BUT, if you really want to learn, a self teach package like that offered by Rocket French can be very effective.  Research has shown that CD-Rom packages are second only to actually living in the country, when committed and motivated learners want to pick up a language.  While I was Training Manager at Kodak Limited, I ran an Open Learning Centre, and the computer-based language packages were found to be very convenient and effective.

I would recommend this approach as useful aid to mastering a language.
