Home-grown adventure holidays

The days of the standard seven day package holiday are gone. Nowadays people want to combine activity with travel, and travelling is not just about the destination but the journey getting there too.

Action and adventure holidays are one of the biggest growing sectors in the travel industry. In years gone by, skiing holidays were the only mainstream activity breaks out there, but now cycling holidays, motor biking tours and sailing trips are becoming quite commonplace.

To many peoples’ surprise, you can have a fantastic adventure right here in the British Isles. Last summer, many people holidayed in Britain not because they didn’t want to jet off to more exotic climes, but because they couldn’t actually afford to because of the recession. They proved to be disappointing to many who were simply after sun, sun and more sun because the UK can’t be relied upon to deliver any decent doses of the ‘s’ word.

However, for people who want to indulge in their love for the great outdoors, whether it be a week hiking in the Lake District or motor biking around the Peak District if you’re not looking for scorching sun to tan in then the UK can deliver a value-packed holiday.

There are other benefits to staying at home for your holiday. Number one of course is price. You don’t need to spend money on currency, no need for flights and you know the territory so you won’t pay too much for a cup of coffee simply because you don’t know any better.

Secondly, a weekend away without having to book holiday time off work is a much more feasible idea than if you were heading further afield. You can leave work on Friday afternoon, be ‘on holiday’ by Friday night and back in the office, refreshed and recharged by Monday morning.

You won’t have to get used to strange and foreign customs either. No odd toilets, funny foods and sly stares and you can easily take your creature comforts with you. This is of obvious benefit if you want to make the most of the myriad mobile apps available now.

GPS apps mean you can plot your course and update loved ones back home with your movements. For those who are concerned about the environment, you can get an app to measure your fuel efficiency and you will also want to keep up to date with the weather too. If your phone is in need of an upgrade then take a look at the Vodafone shop for a great selection of smartphones, including the iPhone.
